Ruth Helen Loehmann

d. September 29, 2018

Ruth Helen Loehmann was born August 27, 1932. She shared her Birthday with her mother Ruth and grandson Max. Ruth grew up on Kingsland Ave, Bronx, NY with her parents Frederick and Ruth, older sister Mona and two younger brothers Frederick and Bruce.

Our mother always spoke very fondly of her days living in the Bronx. Even though her life travels took her to Miami where she met our father, William “Bill” Martin; Baltimore, MD where she lived for forty years raising a family, Laurie and twin daughters Linda and Julia; Cincinnati for twenty years where she worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Fifth Third Bank until she was 80 years old; Back to Frederick, MD where she lived the last two years of her life; She always considered herself a New Yorker.

Ruth has a myriad of interest which she shared with her family. She was an avid reader, keeping up on current events with Life magazine back in the day, and the Time magazine for the past 50 years. She loved going to the bookstore and buying novels which she shared with her sister and daughters, so we could all discuss our opinions about the novel “du Jour.” Murder mysteries were her favorite, possibly because her grandfather, father, uncles, and brother were all NYC police officers.

She loves going to art museums, which she passed down to her daughters who also enjoyed them with varying amounts of enthusiasm. Laurie wanted to read every plaque, Julia enjoyed the artwork, and Linda loved the museum cafeteria. We also went to concerts, traveling Broadway shows and plays, you name it, if it involved culture, we did it.

Our mother lived the last 40 years of her life as a single person which she seemed to quite enjoy. She did things her way, on her terms with no regrets. She was not a person who lived in the past; she was always looking forward to what was coming next. She chose how she was going to live out her final days.

Our mother was in failing health with stage 4 breast cancer the last two years of her life. She was determined to stay in her home as long as possible. Her neighbors on the 4th floor of the Brooklawn Apartments were very kind to her. We were also very fortunate to find three women, Marie, Susan, and La Ree who enabled my mother to live those last 5 months in her apartment.

Ruth Loemann was a tall person with a big personality. Her passing is the end of an era in our lives. Words cannot describe how much we will all miss her.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Kensico Cemetery 273 Lakeview Ave., Valhalla, NY, 10595.
