Ruth Elizabeth Dowden Mayner, 91, of Frederick, Maryland passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018. Born November 23, 1926 in Washington, D.C. to the late William Christopher and Ella (nee Darcey) Dowden. She was the beloved wife of Merle Frederick Mayner for 57 years. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Ellen Dowden Nicol and Frances Dowden Plitt.
Ruth graduated from Western High School in D.C. She would later get her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Hood College. Ruth worked as an accident investigator for the Office of Evaluation Sciences and would go on to work as a physical science technician for the National Transportation Safety Board. She was a juried artist and her many paintings grace the walls in the homes of her extended family. Adventuresome always, she was often co-pilot to her husband as he
flew their small aircraft.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by; her step-children Ronald Mayner (Gail) and Karen Huggans, nieces and nephews: Penny Ruth Wallace (Russell), Joy Elizabeth Nicol, and Roger Henry Nicol, James H. Plitt (Jean); Karl W. Plitt (Pamela), Barbara Plitt; Patricia Begley-VanDamme, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grand children.
A memorial service will be held at the Homewood at Frederick Chapel, 7407 Willow Rd, Frederick, MD 21702, on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Homewood Foundation, 7407 Willow Rd, Frederick, MD 21702 or Jefferson United Church Of Christ, P.O. Box 579, Jefferson, MD 21755.
